The Toys in our Happy Meals

Well, well, well - there is finally some press around the fact that McDonald's and other fast food establishments attract children to consume and desire a 750+ calorie meal that has hundreds of milligrams of sodium and close to the daily recommended amount of fat for a child.

Wall Street Journal Health blog broke the news about this topic, and I'm proud to say that my new home town of San Francisco is trying to pass legislation that would restrict what kind of meals would have a toy in it.  Reward a child with a fun toy when having a solid, healthy meal, right?  What I fear is that the word "healthy" is not the first word that comes to mind when I think "fast food."

What do you think about restricting toys in happy meals?  Exclude them in general?  Include them only in meals that are meet certain health guidelines?  Let me know your thoughts...

Controlling Food Stamps?

Recently, there was some press surrounding the topic of NYC's Mayor, Michael Bloomberg, trying to pass legislation to prevent people from buying soda and other sugary drinks with food stamps.

There is much debate on what people are saying/thinking about this.  Some think that if there are restrictions on buying soda with food stamps, what's next?  Can the government and tax payers control what people buy with a government-funded program?

On the flip side, Bloomberg's goal is to help combat obesity, which plagues the poorer people that live in America.  One article I found said that nearly 40% of all people on food stamps are considered obese.

What do you think?  Do you think this is right for this restriction to pass?  And if not, why?
